QuestionReplacementFusion
What is doneWorn surfaces are replaced with metal and plastic parts. The worn surfaces are removed and the bones are held with plates or screws until they heal into one bone.
Ankle motionStill bends up and down.No longer moves at that joint.

A review of modern studies found no clear difference between the two in overall complication or revision rates. The better choice depends on your alignment, bone quality, the joints around the ankle, your health, and what you need the ankle to do. Read about ankle arthritis and the treatments that come first.
